Manila traffic was terrible as usual. The scope of the problem was even more apparent from a bird’s eye view. She would have never made it on time by car. The helicopter landed in a reserved area in the terminal complex. Nino reached for her bags and then helped her out. A non-military guard was waiting to escort her to the ticketing section. He grabbed the small roll on travel case. Lynn swung the hand carry bag over her head so the strap hung obliquely across her chest mail carrier style. They hopped on a people mover cart. Travelers were not allowed where they were so their ride was unhampered till reaching the back entrance to the International Terminal Building. Then it was “beep! beep! and “Oops!” all the way to the ticket counter. All passengers have to check in a minimum of two hours before the scheduled flight time. Gone were the days when the entire family, friends and townmates arrived in the nick of time and getting on the boarding area was a running success. Then physically getting on the plane was a miracle. She made it. An airport attendant took her by wheel chair to the Security Check Area.
“Do you have anything to declare?” He inquired.
“No.”
“Hold your boarding pass and passport and driver’s license up so they do not have to ask us to stop.”
“No driver’s license.”
“Oh! Oh!” He sighed. You need two picture identifications.”
“I have an ID card/.” She waved it in the air.
“Whew! You are just as bad as your brother!”
“You know him?”
“Yeah! So does the guy who is going to push you to the plane. So don’t get in trouble or we each may need to find a new job.”
“Your jobs are safe.”
“Thanks.”
“Oh! I need to throw this away before going through the line.” Lynn produced a half empty bottle of eye drops.” He took it away from her.
“They frisk at random and whenever needed.” He warned.
They went through the checkpoint without incident. There were shops and snack bars and even restaurants at the waiting area.
“Would you like to pick up something or visit the Ladies Room?”
Lynn made a stop at the “Necessary Room” and then decided to go straight to the gate. She preferred to catch up with her paperwork.
She studied her itinerary. It has just been modified to include a stop in Hong Kong
where her brother would catch up with her. They shall meet with people from Beijing to discuss her recommendations about the Lake and Rivers system in Taga Ilog. If needed, she and her brother plus an interpreter may proceed to Beijing. Her brother would take care of her permits and tickets for the roundtrip to the mainland. She went ahead and scheduled a departure for the US. It can hopefully be changed if needed. It is far better to have a clear schedule than try to make one in a hurry later.
She then checked the tentative venue for the Tokyo Area Seminar. The theme was “The Impact of Amelia Earhart on the Status of Women”. Attendees were encouraged to write something about the topic and submit their entries sometime before the last day of the seminar. She started with something not only relevant to the subject but the location of the gathering as well.
Amelia Earhart’s Impact on the Status of Women
A.The world heard of Amelia Earhart and changed its ATTITUDE about women.
B. BOTH men and and women including Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt were impressed by her.
C. The media CALLED her “Lady Lindy”.
D. The US DEFENSE DEPARTMENT supposedly requested that she take an interest in Japanese installations in the South Pacific prior to the outbreak of WWII.
E. EMPOWERED females literally set the sky as the limit to their ambitions.
F. FATHERS allowed and encouraged daughters to pursue endeavors and occupations traditionally held by men.
G. After her disappearance, Women on Wings International set up GRANTS for education, health and career development for girls and young women. Improving the Status of Women improved the status of families and societies. The world caught the spirit.
1. Last October 2006, private citizens actually started providing mini loans to women in 3rd world countries just like the microcredit WOWI started more than 4 years ago.
2. In Iraq, a housewife was allowed and encouraged by her husband to open her Internet Café introducing new technology to local people.
3. Also in Iraq, a couple asked visiting Agriculturists to teach their DAUGHTER to speak English so she can go to school.
4. In Russia, President Vladimir Putin started a government program to help families care for young children thus reducing the high incidence of child abandonment. Couples are awarded a certain amount per child. It can be used for health care, education of the child or child care to enable mothers to get back to work to elevate their status. The award is given when the child reaches 3 years of age giving an incentive to keep the infant or child at least till then.
5. Also in Russia, female interpreters and TV commentators are seen more often, Unfortunately, a femele reporter was murdered for denouncing the government. The male spy who revealed her identity later died of radioactive substance poisoning. Before death, he wrote a letter to his father to tell the world.
H. Writers had a HEYDAY. Amelia Earhart’s sister, Muriel Earhat Morrissey, spent the rest of her life keeping Amelia’s story and memorabilia alive. She maintained that Amelia crashed within miles of Howland Island. In books about her and US records, Amelia’s radio communications during the last flight indicated that her voice was increasingly loud and clear just before the permanent silence. Her radio was capable of audible broadcast within 40 miles.
I. More recent INVESTIGATORS plan is to look 17,000 ft. underwater within 60 – 100 mi. off the coast of Howland Island. A younger relative with the same name plans to be in that team.
J. Charles Berlitz, in I don’t know which language, wrote that Amelia Earhart’s disappearance has the hallmarks of a mystery triangle story because of the concurrence of a storm and the absence of physical evidence of a crash. He said that she disappeared in the Dragon’s Triangle just West of Tokyo. Amelia took off from Lae, New Guinea, had to deviate from her course because of a storm forcing her to climb over the Bougainville Mountains at an added expense of fuel, was heard by radio capable of 40 mile audibility and disappeared without a trace not even an oil slick. Perfect! However, Lae, Bougainville Islands and Howland Island are ALL OUTSIDE the Dragon’s Triangle. Perhaps Lady Lindy made one final record flight through the Bougainville Heights-Howland Island channel. There have been records of sightings of a strange lady in light, smooth clothes aboard a sausage shaped craft during ancient times. UFO’s and USO’s have been reported up to recent years. Perhaps, the Dragon Lady was tired of being the lone female subject of mystery triangle stories. Perhaps she needed help to PROMOTE THE STATUS OF WOMEN WORLDWIDE.
K. KINGFISHER said: If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach him to fish, you feed him for life.

M. MONEY is not everything.
N. We NEED to set an example, inspire, motivate and enable females for women to succeed.

Lynn deliberated whether or not to add something about Disaster Relief Planning for all clubs and members. She reviewed past notes and communications she had about the subject. There was that little poem about the Indonesian Tsunami. Then she ran across this one

DISASTER PLANNING
Dear Mr. President,
It is a blessing that the worst disasters happen later. The New Orleans experience is bad and people think it is terrible. Talks about the end of the world abound. Yet this was just a drill. The real disaster during our time is the big one around 2017 but that is not all. Nostradamus predicts the same occurrence in New York City probably associated with volcanic activity. Please do not ask me where the volcano is. I have enough trouble understanding his words but SULPHUR was mentioned. If you believe Edgar Cayce, there shall be a split of the continent into four. We shall have more than a French Quarter. The Mississippi area shall divide extending to the Great Lakes. Pope During his 2004 Christmas Eve mass homily, Pope John Paul II mentioned a water related catastrophe in the Great Lakes area but we had the Tsunami in Indonesia instead. He probably foresaw the wrong event but at the correct time of a different disaster. Back to Edgar Cayce … Perhaps, San Francisco, New York City and Mississippi River area will do their thing at about the same time to account for four sections.
When you do your critique of New Orleans and optimize our “READINESS”, please remember to plan for the impossible which may unfortunately be possible. I am NOT a psychic. I just read different writings of different individuals and observed how terribly believable these folks are as proven by history.
About the oil products donated by Kuwait … that is one item we need plenty of. Dollars will be nothing when our oil supply runs lower yet. Also please remember that the rescue vehicles need fuel. Of course, we should develop more environmentally friendly ones. It is also imperative that we be independent of other countries for our supply.

There have been and shall be more disasters. This one in particular is waiting to happen. It may very well be a part of the chaos surrounding the Big One around 2017 or anytime sooner or later if men building tunnels under New York City accidentally cause a large explosion in the wrong place to trigger the other events.

Sometime during the confusion of 9-11-2001, a man showed up on TV saying that he found the verse Nostradamus used five hundred or so years ago to describe the event. He pointed out that Arrite means stop so ARETHUSA probably meant “STOP THE USA.” Lynn agreed. He also noted that the “New City” was generally accepted as referring to New York City and therefore was referring to the attack on the World Trade Center. She agreed again that it referred to New York City but disagreed that it was about the incident that just happened. The first line mentioned fire from the center of the earth. Then it proceeded to say the fire would cause tremors around New York City. The fire on 9-11-2001 was close to the top of the towers, not the earth and did not cause earthquakes at the site nor outside the area. The number two was correct but the buildings did not war on each other and if they did, it was definitely not a long time. The main clue that this was not the 9-11-2001 episode was the inclusion of reddening a new river and being forced to drink water poisoned with sulfur. No new river was formed nor reddened. Blood did not have time to redden the building nor earth. Sulfur is of volcanic origin. There was no volcanic eruption that day. The man discovered a very important prediction about the future. It was fortunate that he did before that second devastating event occurred in the SAME CITY. There is a volcano in the vicinity that Lynn did not know about. Someone better find it and alert all those in danger.
Sometime in 2006, it was mentioned in a TV documentary that a taller tower was going to be built to replace the twin towers. Another documentary described the strength of the foundation under the destroyed buildings. Though tons of burning debris fell on it and stayed hot for three days, only a portion of the reinforced concrete and steel “BATHTUB” was damaged and was later repaired. It was not till July 2007 that Lynn heard that New York City has a huge multistory metropolis underground housing train stations and tunnels, parts of the Port Authority System, other edifices and the city’s water supply. There is the river that shall be reddened and contaminated with sulfur.

Lynn noticed the word “TUB”. “Bathtub” was the term used to denote the foundation of the World Trade Center in the documentary. It was slightly damaged and was repaired. The narrator mentioned plans for a taller building to replace the now non-existent towers.
Lynn had previously searched the internet for reports concerning Osama bin Laden’s role in events since 1979. Here are some excerpts from her notes:
“Osama bin Laden was involved with the 29 December 1992 bombing of the Gold Mihor Hotel in Aden, Yemen which killed a Yemeni hotel employee and an Austrian national and seriously injured the Austrian's wife.”
“ In 1998, an Egyptian Islamic Jihad leader, Ayma al-Zawahiri and Osama bin Laden co-signed a fatwa in the name of the World Islamic Front for Jihad Against Jews and Crusaders. It declared:
“The ruling to kill the Americans and their allies civilians and military --- is an individual duty for every Muslim who can do it in any country in which it is possible to do it, in order to liberate the al-Aqsa Mosque (in Jerusalem) and the holy mosque (in Makka) from their grip, and in order for their armies to move out of all the lands of Islam, defeated and unable to threaten any Muslim. This is in accordance with the words of Almighty Allah, ‘ … and fight the pagans all together as they fight you all together ,’ and ‘fight them until there is no more tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in Allah’. “
Time Magazine published an interview with Rahumullah Yusufsai on 11 January 1999 quoting Osama bin Laden.s words as follows:
“The International Islamic Front for Jihad against the U.S. and Israel has issued a crystal clear fatwa calling on the Islamic nation to carry on jihad aimed at liberating holy sites. The nation of Muhammad has responded to thisappeal. If the instigation for jihad against the Jews and the Americans in order to liberate Al-Aksa Mosque and the Holy Ka’aba Islamic shrines in the Middle East is considered a crime, then let history be a witness that I am a criminal.”
There were more notes.
“ In May 2007 President George Bush revealed there was knowledge of bin Laden seeking to start an Iraq unit in 2005.”
“Linking Al Qaeda and bin Laden to the 11 September 2001 attack is clear. Great Britain agreed.” Osama bin Laden also said: “God has struck America at its Achilles heel and destroyed its greatest building, praise and blessing to Him.”
“He claimed the Taliban were being attacked by the USA because of their religion, not just because of the presence of Osama bin Laden. It is a known fact that America is against the establishment of any Islamic state. He said that terrorism against America deserves to be praised because it was a response to the continuous injustice inflicted upon our sons in Palestine, Iraq, Somalia, Southern Sudan, and Kashmir.”
“OSAMA BIN LADEN’S MAIN REASONS FOR 9-11-2001 ATTACK:
I will explain to you the reasons behind these events, and I will tell you the truth about the moments when this decision was taken, so that you can reflect on it. God knows that the plan of striking the towers had not occurred to us, but the idea came to me when things went just too far with the American-Israeli alliance's oppression and atrocities against our people in Palestine and Lebanon.”
“According to his tapes, bin Laden was inspired to destroy the World Trade Center after watching the destruction of towers in Lebanon by Israel during the 1982 Lebanon War.”
If we are lucky and the count starts from the 1982 Lebanon War, the 27 year War should end on 2009. Unfortunately, counting from his first open attack against a US or West like society in 1992, we can assume that the “Blue Turban King” shall reign till 2019. If Mother Nature does not do a complete job in 2017 or thereabouts, OBL or his followers and /or sympathizers can help. The country will have enough problems to worry abou at the time and will be vulnerable. We better not replace the Achilles heel tendon. The temptation may well be our downfall. We have more than enough reasons to worry about than terrorism. Here is a literally big one not referring to the recurrence of th San Francisco earthquake.

Supposedly, about 600 million years ago, a large meteor crashed in the Yucatan Peninsula. About sixty percent of animal species were lost. If that included the original humans, then we are remakes. If the original group were simply diminished in number, then we are additions to boost the clan. Maybe we are slightly improved versions at least. About 96.4% of our DNA are the same as those of chimps!!!. Some ancient creation myths actually include recreation versions. The reason given in a Mesoamerican story was that the gods were not happy with the creatures because all they did was growl or grunt. They made new ones.
A collision tragedy is one disaster we supposedly can prevent. Scientists supposedly monitor the skies for orbiting masses.
A comet is a different story. Its course is erratic and more difficult to track. Studies of Haley’s comet revealed that it is basically a dirty snow ball with a central ice and rock core surrounded by gases and small particles which burn at different intensity as they encounter gases and particles in space to react with. Such multiole ignition s at irregular intervals have the effect of firing the comet on and off at different directions changing its original trajectory. Time is needed to focus on the target and prdict a possible interception point. The missile or probe has to be fired way ahead of time to get into the correct intersecting orbit at the proper time and location. Failure is a real consequence. In 1994, the world witnessed Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 smash into Jupiter. The dust cloud was larger than the earth’s diameter.
On 21 January 2005, the Hubble Control Center fired a probe to rendezvous with 750 ft. x 2 mi. wide Temple 1 Comet. On 4 July 2005, NASA triggered two rockets to fire from the probe. One hit the solid portion of the comet and the other moved away to take a picture of the fireworks. It was the best Independence Day display in US history. The comet hopefully was nudged away. More recently, a disabled satellite full of unsused hydrogen fuel was ready to crash into the Pacific Ocean. A missile was fired from a ship in the Great Lakes vaporizing the satellite and the fuel preventing what would have been a great disaster. Practice makes perfect. We shall see how well we fare next time.
The search engine listed more hazards in the sky. Lynn clicked on the “Bearded Comet”. It was about a bearded Russian or “Red Comete”. Actually, she thought that the appearance of the broken Columbia Spaceship as it gracefully descended in the blue Texas sky was more like it with the split contrails looking like plaits of a long, white beard being dragged down by the chin. There was a Red Star also called Planet X, which was supposed to appear and hit earth between spring and summer of 2007. This was judged as hypothetical by experts in the field. There actually was a red comet called Sedna discovered on November 2003. Records showed that it has been spotted as early as 2001. The composition is unknown but if it were anything like Sedona, Arizona, there may be large amounts of Iron Oxide in the soil giving the red color of Red Rock Country. There was RED HAIL which was another version of “Hail Hitler!”. There was another subject in the same category. Milarpa’s Hail seen on the hillside after a hailstorm really were red earthworms crawling out of the cavities formed by the falling hail.
Planets are a lot bigger and can pulverize each other or divert one or the other’s course. However, they are sufficiently big and dense enough to sustain their current orbits and distances from each other. Mars, the RED PLANET, named after the Greek god of WAR, is 34 million miles away from earth. We have sent probes to study it for a possible source of energy or even a substitute home planet. It was actually suggested that the multitude of asteroids orbiting between Mars and earth can provide stepping stones from one to the other. It may be necessary to visit more frequently to confirm the feasibility, suitability and safety of Mars as a new address. It may prove to be a very uncomfortable one. Its large elliptical orbit around the sun and the 25.1 degree tilt of its vertical axis make very long and sharply contrasting seasons. Most places will be too cold to survive in unless we learn how to do so in -184 degrees F temperature on a long winter night. A small portion actually gets warmed to 68 degrees F in summer. Make your reservations NOW!!! Though there was evidence of rivers, lakes and even oceans, it is not known if these were formed by water or some other liquid. The bodies of liquid were frozen but showed hints of thawing the past 4 million years. The atmosphere is very thin with 95.3% Carbon dioxide. We need levels lower than 20%. Oxygen is 1.6%. We need close to 90%. Nitrogen is 2.7%. WE may as well leave that alone. The atmosphere is very thin. The air pressure range is 1 to 15 millibars at the highest peak and lowest point in a volcano respectively. That of Earth is 1000 millibars at sea level. The composition of the air in Mars does not matter. It is impossible to breathe it anyhow. Some Carbon dioxide may be frozen in the south polar ice cap. Most has been converted to Carbonate which Mars was unable to recycle. The total Carbon dioxide available for greenhouse effect is thus low. Large volcanoes were seen but no sign of recent volcanic eruptions were observed. The Tharis bulge was presumed to be the result of absence of tectonic activity and lateral movement of land plates. If there were a ring of fire over there, it has been silent for millions of years. The soil is rich in Iron oxide and Sulfur compounds. There must have been eruptions a long time ago.
Is the lack of side movement of land due to perhaps an absence of Mars wobbling because iron is widely, uniformly and densely distributed? On the other hand, if a larger amount of Iron is available and swishes around, greater differences in magnetic force between areas would occur changing the North – South line and polarity. There may have been wobbling. The Iron and Sulfur on the surface may be the result of Mother Nature’s last outburst before changes ceased. Are the faults and lava just temporarily frozen? Will re-warming of the planet resume volcanic activity and recycling of Carbonate to Carbon dioxide and subsequent greenhouse effect?
Experts said it will take an active tumultuous flow of Komatiitic lava at about1600 degrees F for 100 days to erode and decompose previously emplaced and cooled Carbonate rocks to release a significant amount of Carbon dioxide contributing to a more normal atmosphere and greenhouse effect. Then the temperature can return to near normal and water can flow. A safe way to ignite a volcano and control the size of the resulting cloud cover would be needed.
It was postulated that Mars was at some time in the remote past similar to earth. More surprisingly, some think that Mars was our previous home. It was also postulated that earth went through a catastrophic rapid cooling during its first billion years followed by a very slow rise in temperature. Venus was also mentioned as a prior habitat by man. It is on the other end of the scale temperature wise. It is continuously in flames. It sounds logical to think that we are actually seeing the extremes of conditions our own planet has been in. We fortunately are taking turns being hospitable and not. Man needs to learn from both planets. The biggest lesson is to prevent being in either shape again. Learning to start and stop volcanic activity may be crucial. Maintaining moderate activity is critical.
Meteorologists know that one change in a barometric parameter and so forth is understandably followed by a series of others. In a scientific magazine published in the mid nineties, it was proposed that earthlings store carbon dioxide in rocks and other suitable places for future recovery. It also was said that procuring fuel such as methane, frozen or in whatever state from other planets may be necessary when the entire universe is so expanded that earth will not be dense enough to yield adequate fuel per target harvest area for its inhabitants. It was also said that we may in fact be facing freezing temperatures sometime in the 3000’s. We may have to think beyond excessive temperature elevation and drying. What series of events follow should worry us more.
Widespread dryness and hunger cause world societal instability. Famine and pestilence can decimate more than patience. War gets more frequent, longer and conducive to persecution and genocide.
A global cloud cover secondary to massive volcanic eruption and dust from impact by orbiting bodies are only two of possible explanations for the change in Mars’ state of affairs. There are more physical geological and meteorological scenarios to investigate. Two or more can occur simultaneously. A so called low probability factor such as failure of ocean water circulation may not be a major culprit but can add to the overall picture as the last straw that broke the camel’s back. Keep studying the risks and options and consequences of each one. Avoiding extremes is the key. Next time someone comes by UFO or USO, be sure to inquire about the conditions elsewhere. There should be a comparative report by now. It may be bad rather than good that no extraterrestrial guest has ever pleaded to stay with us. We may have to go with them. Mars is not ready for us.
Lynn heard the pre-boarding announcement. She packed her paraphernalia in her hand carry bag and her “i” Page in her blazer’s inside pocket. An airport attendant approached. “Anyone needing assistance or those traveling with small children may board now.” The voice on the PA device said.
“Ready to get on the plane?” He asked.
“Yes.”
He wheeled her to the front of the waiting line of passengers. The flight agent checked her boarding pass and passport and ID card and motioned for the attendant to push her through the jet way. At the entrance of the plane, a flight crew member asked if she would need further assistance.
“I just need an arm to hold on. I can walk to my seat.” Lynn replied and got off the chair. She really could have walked from the ticket desk with assistance but most airline crew aides prefer to push her on a chair rather than risk her tripping on an obstacle, bumping into small children or being accidentally dragged away by oncoming traffic. The lady checked the seat number on the boarding pass and led her to seat number 5F.
Just as Lynn guessed it was just after the divider between first class and regular. That meant that her carry on bag had to go on the upper luggage compartment instead of under the seat.
“That’s a little high to reach, isn’t it?”
“ Yes.” When I was a little girl, I dreamed of being a pilot but my eyes were not good. So, I chose second best. I kept saying that when I grow up, I’ll be a stewardess. Those I saw looked very good in their unforms plus I wanted to travel all over the world even then.”
“So, did you try?”
“No.” Lynn stretched to reach the upper luggage compartment. “I did not grow up.”
“If you need anything out of here, just press the call button.”
“Thanks.”
Lynn had essential items in her pockets. She really may not need those either for a short trip. She needed to plan her stay in Tokyo instead. It has been a long time since her last visit. Fortunately, a member of the Tokyo WOWI Club volunteered to meet her at the airport and take her to the hotel where the Area Seminar was going to be held. She did not belong to this District but she had attended one of their conferences in Manila and met a few of them at International Conventions. Disaster Planning was not on the agenda. It takes years to plan future venues and schedule topics and speakers. She was just going to speak privately with as many individuals as possible. Some guests come from neighboring countries also. Besides, key International Officers should be here. She can write a short article in the Seminar Newsletter about the plight of the members of District 10 in the US Gulf Area.
She had been in contact with the WOWI Club of New Orleans. One of the members was able to be a speaker at a special meeting of her club. Almost two years since Hurricane Katrina caused havoc in the area leaving more than 1000 dead, homes and buildins destroyed including the football statdium that was “sheltering” citizens from the storm, the city was still nowhere close to being normal. The people were even farther than being close to pre-hurricane status. Much of them are still homeless or in temporary homes. Those fortunate to receive government trailers were suffering from strange illnesses probably resulting from release of toxic fumes from materials used in building the homes. Others are living with friends or families or renting living quarters wherever possible. Many lost jobs and businesses. Those who were close to retirement age decided to do so. Some of these were teachers and other key members of society. Children were out of school for a long time. Some were able to be absorbed in out of state schools. Those whose homes were not completely ruined cannot rebuild because they do not have jobs or sufficient funds. Litigation prevented access to money for rebuilding. Building codes and rebuilding strategies were similarly still being discussed and argued back and forth. Even cleanup was delayed. Blame for flood control measures that failed were still being investigated. Some residents with a sense of humor laughed when the local paper printed the comment by someone. “The pumps were fine until they had to pump.” Rebuilding the levies and other structures may not be adequate for worse storms and floods.
The members of her club were fortunate enough to all survive but eight were missing for weeks. Half of the members dropped out or moved elsewhere. Amazingly, the club was able recruit a few new members. No one wanted to succeed the three time president who fortunately stayed on that position. One member moved outside the city but still attended meetings and activities. The member who visited Arizona commuted between two locations to keep up with her new job and club duties. Her home was slowly being cleaned up. She plans to slowly repair one thing at a time with her brother’s help. Work, fortunately at least in part can be done by friends and other relatives. What she remembered most of the post Katrina days were looking for her loved ones and an endless series of equally endless lines for food, aid, job opening information, a place to stay, clothes, other necessities. She missed not having her computer. She figured that in her isolation, she could at least communicate with others to keep her sanity. She went to the library nearby and asked to use their computer. She managed to hold on to her Internet account. She found the other members. Lynn found her in the course of communicating with other flood victims in the area.
WOWI members have a way of surviving. One member who admittedly was Internet illiterate managed to similarly use someone’s computer and list her name on a site for lost and found Katrina victims. At the time, she was alone and staying temporarily with strangers in a different state. WOWI members from that state found her through herown ad. Someone had a heart attack. On the other hand, one almost immediately single handedly manned a business help line for co workers. She was one of Lynn’s more easy to find contacts.
Two years later, no more than 30% of damages have been repaired. Only four hospitals were open and not all were back to full functional capability. Many schools were still closed. Many still lived out of state. Maybe two out of three who left returned. Of those, about seventy percent were born in New Orleans and would not live elsewhere unless the city disappears from the map. The mayor himself was housed in a trailer. Many FEMA trailers have not been allocated for use. Some of those occupied were found to cause illnesses probably the “sick building syndrome” caused by fumes from formaldehyde given off by formica counter tops, polish on different surfaces and so forth. Suicide rate among survivors was high. Jobs were still difficult to find. The rate of Acute Depression went up.
Almost three years later, it was disclosed that supplies supposed to be distributed to Katrina victims were still in storage or donated to other institutions. During the confusion, those responsible for keeping track of them also lost track of where they went. Also, apparently, communications were so disconnected that people aske the wrong personnel for the availability of supplies and those who knew of some asked the wrong people if such were needed. Apparently, such need was not communicated or even deemed non-existent.
On the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, there was a mandatory order to evacuate. Hurricane Gustave was on its way. It may be no worse than a category storm but no one trusted Mother Nature. Response was almost 100% better. The National Guard was there. Communications, evacuation procedure, supplies, Medical and other Rescue operations were in place. Information to the public was broadcast widely. Unfortunately, Hurricane Gustave came too soon. Only one of the water pumps has been relocated to a high enough location. Levies were strengthened but not as much as desired. Reforestation of fertile deltas were still in the planning stages.
Not all patients could be evacuated. Some were deemed untransportable. Volunteers stayed. At least two hospitals stayed open. One baby managed to arrive, admitted in one of them and later transported along with some patients. Then days later, Hurricane Ike arrived. It concentrated its fury on Galveston, Texas. Once more, emergency response was great but Mother Nature still caused a lot of damage. There was an additional problem. Some elected not to evacuate. Some who wanted to do so later were unable to afford the sudden increase in gasoline prices. Much later, there was no gasoline at all in gas stations. Of course, power outage, water supply disruption, flooding. Property damage was still high. Death was minimal. There were lines for different things as usual. However, though food and other commodities ran low or completely disappeared from time to time, they were available again within hours. Josephine came and went. No one noticed except the weather man. One thing sure, we shall hear about others.
WOWI members worldwide are so used to giving and pulling others on their feet. Being on the other side was never considered. This episode proved that every member, area, club, district and the international leaders better be prepared for such status reversal. Clubs wanted to donate to the affected club and its members. However, inability to forsee the need and set up for such a procedure hampered the ability to do so. The organization was geared to raise funds for the needy who were usually strangers in the community as well as across the world. Paperwork and regulations did not include donating to specific WOWI Clubs and members. Funds were usually set up for use for specific programs set up years earlier. Foundations to donate to had regulations to disburse according to criteria set up earlier and for the traditional recipients in the said international, district or club projects. Donations to the local club were directed to the District Foundation which had to divide the money to the projects designated to receive such moneys. The club in trouble only received a small portion of what the sympathetic donors gave in response to their plight. Such a small portion was further restricted to use for that specific club’s projects, not the club nor members.
For the club to support their projects, the club must first continue to eist. For the club to exist, the members have to survive. Strengthening the individual member is essential. Provision for Disaster Planning that includes, a contingency fund, planning, prevention, response and emergency financial support would be needed. Foundation, Fundraising and donation rules have to be modified at all levels of the international body to make it work. Each club may have to take the initiative by creating their individual tax deductible donation/receiving fund till uniform standards are agreed upon and instituted by all. Legal issues and ethics can be studied by a select committee.
“It’s about time!” The guy who sat next to her said.
“ … For what?”
“ … Pre flight safety instructions.” He said pointing to a stewardess standing at the front end of the isle with a detached seatbelt in her hands getting ready for a demonstration.
“Where is the nearest emergency exit?” She asked afterwards. “I can never spot them. The signs are not big enough. I have eye trouble.”
“The nearest to us is where we entered on boarding. Hold on to the headrests as you go to the front, make a left after the last one. If you find a door and you are still in the cabin, you’ll get into the bathroom instead of out to safety. Back up a few paces.”
“Suppose there is a fire in that direction?”
“The middle exits are usually over the wings usually at number 13.“ h!”
He laughed. “In case of an emergency, even number 13 is lucky IF you find it. Go eight seats behind us and feel where the others are jumping out of.”
“I hope I find it.”
“If I happen to be alive, hang on to my belt or shirt and move fast.”
“If you happen not to be alive, I’ll revive you so you can help me get out.”
“ … Fair enough! It’s a deal!”
The stewardess finished her routine. A voice was heard over the PA system.
“This is the co-pilot speaking.” He made the usual flight name, path, ETA, weather and other routine announcements. The sky was clear. The sun was bright. She took out her “i” Page from her pocket and reviewed more items. She then drafted messages to transfer to the hotel’s computer later for transmission to friends and family. She reminded her brother to set up their meting in Hong Kong and subsequent trip to Beijing if the officials cannot meet them in Hong Kong. He was worried about taking her into Beijing because of the persecution of Christians over there. Of course, her passport would show her occupation as a physician and she can wear lay person clothes. She does that everywhere anyhow. She had no plan to deny her membership in a religious order if confronted. He probably would even cancel all plans if they have to go all the way to the mainland. Well, shopping would be just as good in Hong Kong. So would be the food and entertainment. Seeing ‘Bird’s Nest’ in person may not be possible since the Olympics are over and the building may be off limits to the public by now. It was said that it would be converted to something else later.
“ … Really? Stop kidding yourself!” She thought. “Of course I am dying to see Beijing!!!”
It was a good opportunity to draft a message for the Bishop in Arizona. She told him about the plan to go to Hong Kong or even Beijing. She therefore would be delayed getting to her new station.
This is one time she can plan to attend all the important sessions without having to worry about a wide selection of clothes. It is not so bad to be a member of the clergy after all. However, she would miss the opportunity to shop for exotic women stuff. More disappointing would be turning down such gifts if any. However, she already figured out an excuse to accept a Kimono. It is guaranteed to be cold in the meeting rooms. After her stay in the Philippines, she would be shaking like a wet puppy and would need a warm cover. Any color should go well with holy black.
“How do you do that?” The man beside her asked.
“ … Do what?”
“ … Work on the I pod. I thought your eyes were bad.”
“They are.” She replied. “I brighten the screen, remove all the extra display columns for more space for text and format to change to Arial Black, regular, size 12 font. I can read that.”
“I was always told to use only size 14, Times New Roman, Bold font to our visually disadvantaged customers.”
“Arial black is the most dense or rich text and therefore contrasts quite well with the background. It is also sufficiently bold. Formatting to bold font makes the letters bleed into each other or into holes in the letters B, D, etc. making it very difficult to read. You can get away with size 12 or even 9 or 10 instead of 14 and save paper or screen space with these settings. A size 14 Times New Roman is sometimes not good enough because it is still too faint for some. Even larger fonts may not be readable if they are too fine or light colored. Pink is terrible. The background has to be plain white.”
“I didn’t think I pods are capable of fancy fonts.”
“This is an “i” Page … not an I pod. The new models are capable of all creating and editing functions and software has been released for use with older ones. I also can plug in electronic glasses for extra magnification and looking at pictures and illustrations.”
“Great for movies.”
“Yeah and with a big screen effects too. However, the pictures only get bigger. Unless the original image had a high number of dots per line, the colors and details actually get less when everything stretches out.”
“So, you get a ‘CinemaSmudge’?”
“ … Just about! I don’t watch movies while on the plane anyhow. I reserve whatever free time I get to rest my eyes and do my visualization.”
“Hmmm…”
Lynn wondered what he was thinking of. Some associate mind over body techniques as “nutworks”.
“How come you did not choose to try an I phone instead? That seems to be the creation of the hour.” He redirected the subject matter.
“I am more interested in a pocket device to use to create, edit and store documents safely from viruses. I cannot afford to lose my notes. It takes quite an effort to get them done.”
“I see. The I phone is not set up to edit documents at this point. The emphasis is on the ability to open different kinds of files and transmit them.”
“The only thing I would need to transmit when I am on the run may be an S.O.S. signal if needed. I can use my cell phone for that. It is easier to carry around.“
Suddenly, the plane felt like it was pushed up from underneath and dropped again. Turbulence followed. The “Fasten Seatbelt” signs lit up. Lynn glanced at the sky. It was still cloudless but not as bright blue as it was earlier.
“Would you happen to have a Magnetic Anomaly Detector?” She asked the man beside her.
“I wish I had access to such a device.”
“Do you have a compass?”
“Not with me.” He replied. “I don’t carry gadgets around. The compass needle would be dancing with each bump of the plane at this time anyhow.”
She looked at him quizzically. He did not explain. Amelia flew her way throughout her career aided mostly by her compass. Her last message heard by the Itasca radio operator was about her location based on compass reading. She depended on it and rested her fate on it. She was confident enough about her ability to read it and would have bet her life on it. Her reading was most likely correct based on the location of the true North Magnetic Pole at that particular time. The North and South locations have switched in the past. The true North is making a wide circle at the Northern Polar region right now. Erratic compass readings were said to have occurred during mysterious disappearances at the Bermuda Triangle. The deepest areas of the ocean system have less layers of soil and rock to provide buffering interfaces between the earth’s magnetic center and the surface. A magnetic anomaly was noticed within that triangle. With the constant circuitous movement of all heavenly bodies, corresponding cyclical intergravitational field intereactions occur. A change in the axis of the individual planets at different times further complicate these changes. The resulting tilt of the Earth can account for at least some of the observed mysterious happenings reported in the past. We have to start plotting the dates of these events against the location of the true North, the axis of the earth, global temperature and distances to surrounding celestial bodies. Someday, we may have a rough schedule of when to expect a little or a lot of them and when.

Black globe – Black Hole, Blue globe – Earth, Yellow dot – North Pole, Dark oval – AE Triangle and Amelia Earhart’s Electra
No tilting of Earth’s axis shows AE at the bottom of the globe, not exposed to the pull of gravity from the Black Hole. The North Pole is in between the two and closer to AE and therefore magnetizes AE first preventing her from going farther. Tilting the Earth’s axis exposes the AE Triangle and AE’s plane to the line of magnetism by the Black Hole. The North pole is not on the same axis and not interposed between the two. Added pull from other directions may or may not help. The Black Hole is much stronger than the whole Earth.
Yes, there is a Black Hole in our galaxy. Additionally, a substantial layer of gas bubbles obstruct the force of gravity. Eliminating such pull from the sea bottom would have been a terrible complicating factor. Methane gas bubbles have been observed more and more frequently at these mysterious places in our oceans. Unidentified Sea Objects called USO’s used to be thought of as delusions or fictitious inventions. Now, they are believed to be previously sunken vessels being propelled upwards and out by large bursts of methane gas bubbles. They used to be reported only in the Dragon Triangle. As of 2007, some have been photographed at the Bermuda Triangle area. Those observations triggered the thought of a possible underwater base just below the USA. Suspicions of covert activity by unfriendly groups have restarted.
Lynn needed someone to find out or share any detected noticeable erratic behavior of the compass immediately. She searched for the call button. The man beside her pulled her hand away from her armrest.
“They already have all sorts of wrong readings to correct. They need to concentrate.” He warned.
The PA system buzzed and Lynn heard a familiar voice.
“This is Captain C. Gao speaking.”
Lynn looked out the window. Clouds have gathered. The sky was darker. The same geological changes she worried about may have been responsible for sudden storms associated with mysterious disappearances.
“Oh my God …” Lynn started the Act of Contrition mentally. “I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell … but most of all, because I offended Thee Who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve with the help of Thy grace to confess my sins, do penance and amend my life. Amen.
